Pinoy Pride: Fil-Am Spoelstra Named as Heat Head Coach

Erik Celino Spoelstra was named as the new head coach of Miami Heat after Pat Riley stepped down. I’m not really familiar with this Spoelstra and I was thrilled to find out that he’s a Filipino-American. Spoelstra‘s mother hails from San Pablo, Laguna and his father is a Dutch-Irish. He has been to the Philippines only once.

Spoelstra originally joined the Miami Heat organization as a video tape coordinator in 1995. He also helped the team in individual player training taking credit for honing Dwyane Wade‘s shooting.

At 37 years old, Spoelstra is the youngest NBA head coach today. He is 69 days younger than second youngest head coach, Lawrence Frank of the New Jersey Nets.

After spending 13 seasons with the Heat organization, Spoelstra finally climbed up the ladder and got his chance to call the shots for the Heat.

If my memory serves me right, I think Erik Spoelstra is the first and only Fil-Am who became a head coach for an NBA team. Kudos to the man. Congratulations and good luck to Erik Spoelstra for his tenure as the Miami Heat head coach.

  2. I think Riley must know something here and this young man must have something special to offer. I’ll tell you this – I’d rather bring someone like him on board than hire Larry Brown as the Bobcats chose to do. While Riley’s hall of fame career is unaffected by whether or not Spoelstra succeeds, he is a proud, ego-conscious guy who did not make this hire just to repay someone for hard work. With the candidate’s lack of actual coaching experience, it is a bold move. You have to believe Riley truly sees something we at a judgemental distance do not.

well yeah.. this move is pretty bold.. sure there must be something about spolestra that we don’t see now.. who knows, maybe choosing a young coach can bring new energy in miami..

  4. Woah! Just like Tim Cone sticking to Holcomb because he sees something from him that fans do not. Well good thing the aces is the hottest team in the pba right now. Going back to the main topic, a really proud Pinoy Spoelstra, making name in the NBA. That’s is something, really something.

Another side news: Dan Miragliotta, WTF is wrong with you? Anbother controversial call against Brandon Vera in UFC 85.
