Filipino athlete Willy Wang won a gold medal in wushu demonstration event in Beijing yesterday. Wang emerged as the gold medalist in the wushu nanquan and nangun event after he defeated 20 other competitors.
Wang’s gold medal is a consolation to somehow make up for country’s mediocre campaign in the Beijing Olympics. But wushu is categorized as a demonstration/exhibition sport; Wang’s gold medal will not be counted in the regular Olympic standings.
Three other Filipino wushu artists, Mary Jane Estimar, Marian Mariano and Benjie Rivera have secured bronze medals after winning their opening matches and advancing to the semifinal phase. Estimar, Mariano and Rivera are competing in the sanshou (combat) events. The semifinal matches are scheduled this Saturday.
