In his first fight in the 135-pound division, Juan Manuel Marquez proved that added weight is not a hindrance after he TKOd Joel Casamayor in the eleventh round of their bout. Marquez is now recognized as the lightweight champion of The Ring magazine.
Marquez floored Casamayor with a hard left hook two minutes into the 11th round. Casamayor quickly went back in his feet and tried to retaliate, but Marquez unleashed well-timed combinations and stunned his opponent. A perfect right hand landed squarely on Casamayor’s face and he went down to the canvass for the second time, but this time, the referee stopped the fight.
Juan Ma’s win is starting to stir up talks again for a possible third meeting against pound-for-pound king, Manny Pacquiao. The first meeting of the two boxers ended in a controversial draw but Pacquiao emerged as the winner in their second outing. Marquez believes that he never lost to Pacquiao, but he is still keen on getting another shot at him.
Pacquiao, who is set to fight Oscar De La Hoya on December, expressed his willingness to fight Marquez for the third time, but under certain conditions in the fight contract.
